Week of Apr 27

Happy Monday!

I have had many emails and questions about the choice experiments, how many do I do, how do I send them to you, do you have any work from me turned in, do I have to do them all…so let me first off clarify the instructions (as given in the original assignment sheets) for completing and turning in work.

Choose ONE (that you have supplies to do), do it! Snap a pic or video, you can even write about it in a journal or a Google Doc to share with me. Explain what you saw happening, and then write a short summary of the SCIENCE behind it.

Here are the sets of choices given to each class period, starting with April 6, April 13, and last Apr 20 –

  • 1st period: Dollar Bills and Ringing in my Ears; We all scream for Ice Cream and Water Bending; Pepper Trick and Match and Water Trick
  • 2nd period: Naked Egg and Alka Seltzer Rockets; Exploding Lunch Bag and Eggshell Geodes; Bubble Prints and Coloring Flowers
  • 4th period: Invisible Ink and Dancing Popcorn; Slime and Would you like a cup of Lava?; Burning Money and Foam Battle
  • 5th period: Inky Elevators and Vertically Challenged; Plastic Milk and Chicken Sounds; Slime and Would you like a cup of Lava?
  • 6th period: Water Xylophone and Which Way?; Rolling with Static Electricity and Density Column;Plastic Milk and Chicken Sounds
  • 7th period: Salt Water Density and Sidewalk Constellations; Burning Money and Foam Battle; The Exploding Lunch Bag and Eggshell Geodes
  • 8th period: Melting Away and Tie-Dye Milk; Bubble Prints and Coloring Flowers; We all scream for Ice Cream and Water Bending

Example:

If I wanted to complete Tie-Dye Milk, I would gather the supplies, read through the steps, think about what might happen (expected outcome, actual outcome, what if I change this or don’t do that), do the activity, take some pics of the process or video it, take some notes or draw a diagram or illustration of how it looked, and then I would think (and maybe ask someone or do some research on it) about what science may have been happening and give a brief explanation of it all. I would then choose how I would send it in to be marked for grading. If I am handwriting it, maybe I can take a pic of my notes and just email that with any other pics. Maybe I could do a Google Slides with all of my info and pics or I also could start a Google Doc and type in my notes and add my pics. Then I can share the Slides or Doc with my teacher. I might even have to ask a parent to send my pics through a text message or messenger app, whatever I need to make some contact my teacher and I can be certain it was submitted and can all be included for my grade.

I was hoping for more “why did that happen” type reactions on some of the labs, and maybe include parents, siblings or friends in the activity or discussions. For example in the Dollar Bill activity, did you ask anyone else to try and pick up the dollar? Could they? What was different in each person that tried? Was anyone able to pick it up? WHY NOT?? What do you think is the science behind this? This is an example of what you would write down in a journal or type up and turn in.

There are several ways to contact me, but email is best – [email protected]

Use the same email address in DOCS or SLIDES to share the doc with me so I can see it, and it does send me a notification email that a doc was shared, once you share it with me, you can still access and edit the doc.

Hope that clarifies any questions on the lab activities. Yes, I need 3 different labs per student and would like them in by Sunday, May 3rd.

This same information will be in Classroom as well, along with any other assignments that I give this week. I appreciate everyone trying to get some clarification so these may be completed. There are also paper copies on the tables at front door of school. I do not know yet how any paper assignments will be turned in so just hold on to it for now.

And last but not least – here is my sweet Olive with her brand new puppies. I am in love with them all so let me introduce to you my Favorite Days of the Week:

Have a Fantastic Week and please contact me if you need anything!!

Week of April 20

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was so good to see some of your faces on the Zoom last week. If you didn’t catch it, join us this Thursday at 3, just to say hi and check in. We miss you all.

Working on posting this weeks quarantine lab assignment in Classroom so look for that today. If you have already done some of the experiments, please remember to share them with me. Write a short science explanation of what happened, what you thought would have happened, if you messed it up and started over, and snap a pic or short video and send it to me!! I have enjoyed seeing what you have been doing!

If you need Classroom code for your class period or for Wall’s ALL, email me and I will send it to you!

Hope to see you all Thursday and have a great week! (Oh, and we are having puppies tomorrow!!)

April 6 – April 10, 2020

I hope everyone had a great weekend, although if you are anything like me, the days have just run together. It was so nice to hear from some of you!! I really do miss knowing what is going on with everyone, miss your faces!

I just wanted to touch base today for the week mainly to let you know that I am posting some Quarantine Science Experiments in Google Classroom. Each class period will have different choices so make sure you check!! These experiments cover lots of different types of science, so just pick one you like, and that you have the supplies for, and snap a pic or video of it, and write about the science behind it. More details in Classroom…

Have fun and be safe!!

UPDATED 4/7 to say that there are paper copies for pick up of the choices for each class period. Every Monday I will post 2 more choices and print paper copies for pickup.

Check In 4/1/2020

So much for pranking all of you today, I had a few good ones up my sleeve!!

Since the update this week about school being closed until May 4th, I just wanted to check in on everyone. I know a few of you have emailed me with questions, or have shared some things with me in google, but I miss all of you and would like everyone to be able to check in – so I am sending out messages in each of the individual class periods in Classroom.

I will post this in Walls ALL as well, but let’s keep in touch and check on each other in your class period on Classroom!!

STAAR Review Packets

These are the 8th grade science STAAR review packets for each of the 4 reporting categories – remember we did the force and motion one in class.

These do not need to be printed out or completed, but rather as a study guide so when we come back to school we hopefully won’t be so behind.

I miss you all! Email me if you have any questions or just want to say heyyyy!

Lesson Plans 3/23 – 3/27

Hi everyone! I hope you all are SAFE and HEALTHY and hopefully enjoying some extra time at home with your people! I haven’t killed any of mine, YET, but I do have a house full as the college kiddos are back at home and there are lots of “I’m BORED” and “I’m HUNGRY” and other yelling and fighting that I try to ignore. (I’m ready to come back to school!)

When we first were asked to post some assignments on our blog, I assigned a few things in STEMscopes for TEKS 8.5D and 8.5E. My thought in assigning both TEKS at the same time, was that you would spread those assignments out over the two weeks. Now, here we are home at least another week and since that was our last two units, all I really had left was some STAAR review material (like that one packet we did over force and motion).

I will be posting those reviews on Google Classroom by Monday 3/30. I will also make some paper copies to leave at the school for pick-up. I also have something additional notes that I will be posting as well. Just check in on Classroom every few days and feel free to email me with any questions.

I hate that we weren’t able to be in class these weeks, as I had great fun plans for chemical reactions. I will post some videos, but it just isn’t the same as seeing it happen live in person. I miss you all and hope to see you before the end of the year – but please be smart and wash your hands and take care of yourselves and your families!

UPDATE 3/26:

STAAR review bundles posted in next blog post and in Classroom, along with some “Doodle Notes” and other review material. This is only notes/study materials to review/complete.

Lesson Plans 3/17-3/30

Hi guys and girls!!
I am feeling a little bummed about missing out on our chemical equations and reactions units so I am letting you guys try and come up with a few experiments on your own with basic household items. You can use YouTube or ScienceBuddies.com or any website you can find that gives you some simple home experiment examples and see if you can (with the help of a parent) do this at home (think mentos in the coke bottle, baking soda and vinegar). Get everything together and maybe practice a time or two, then video your experiment and explain what is happening. This may take some researching about what the chemicals are, but use a periodic table to get the symbols and see if you can find a chemical equation that represents your experiment. You can email me with any questions, and I will have some guiding notes and help available to you in STEMscopes. Start and share a Google Doc with me about your experiment, trials, results and what you think is happening or happened.
Have fun and stay safe and healthy, I miss you all!

New STEMscopes assignments will be for 8.5D chemical formulas and 8.5E chemical reactions. Start each TEKS with the vocabulary, video, stemscopedia, PhET (game like activity), and lastly the quiz. I will continue to post in Google Classroom (Walls All) for interesting videos or websites that might help!
